*Idea - Display every second of 24hrs actual time all together continuously for 24hrs. In order to show every second of the 24hr clock in one given space and make it viewable at any time in real time be it physical or digital space.

Slightly confused? Don't be, i can just imagine it and see it :) If it were built with actual cogs or watches it would be huge! If it were in a digital space i'm not sure if there's a screen big enough to display it.

Berlinale 2012 - London, Berlin, Milan

A work colleague and good friend Michele Castellucci from Milan with whom I worked with in London at an online media agency flew into Berlin for the Berlinale 2012. Michele Castellucci and Joseph Fortebraccio one an Award for Best DOP at the Talent Campus competition for a music video they submitted. London connections coming into Berlin from Milan, it was really good seeing them. Yesterday we went to the premiere screenings of the film shorts at the Berlinale, films of note were Rafa, The Man that Got Away and La Santa. As usual afterwards we then went on to talking, discussing creative ideas into the night...

The film The Dark Crystal directed by Jim Henson and Frank OZ was bought to my attention the yesterday. This was so ahead of it's time haunting, proper dark, fantasy underworld, amazing animatronics. Here's the film poster which was designed by Richard Amsel.

I was recently commissioned by Tlön Books Publishing to art direct, design and typeset their new title 'Brenda's Bottom and her birds'. It was a joy working on this great project with the author Clare Stanhope and Tlön for many reasons. One reason being that i've never worked on an entire children's book before and working with lots of illustrated birds and placing them along the bendy River Thames in London was good fun. Includes 52 types of birds and many of London's famous buildings and bridges. I designed it whilst in Berlin, it was a trip down London memory lane :)

Look out for it, its going to be great to see it in print, smelling the ink on the page, published and in the bookshops and of course the official book launch in London. Can't wait!!!

Big turnout and constant stream of questions rolling out from the floor to the panel. Twitter have some interesting developments going down for the short and long term. Top to see this here in Berlin whilst feeling the excitement. Will be going to more of these events for sure, some serious dev's around in Berlin. Twitter could be building an office in Germany.

Zbigniew Rybczynski

Yesterday I went to see the show 'Der Stand der Bilder' an exhibition of works by Zbigniew Rybczynski and Gábor Bódy both specialising as media pioneer artists. The exhibition was held at the Akademie Der Künste, Berlin-Tiergarten. Beyond any doubt the work on show of Zbigniew Rybczynski was thought provoking, memorable and inspiring for new media artists. Two works in particular struck a chord and both were videos; Tango and Imagine the latter being the famous music video for John Lennon's song Imagine released in 1986. The choreography and timing of Tango is pure cleverness with a touch of genius. In Tango no one person or subjects ever crosses the path of the other even when the room is rapidly populating. I now see how Zbigniew and his work is influential to the likes of contemporary directors namely Michel Gondry.

I Am Cuba Film Trailer - (1964) Soy Cuba is the original title. Arguably one the best films ever made. Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov, the film looks at the political oppression and the deviation of power and wealth. Every shot is amazing and superb, it's a directors guide to everything film, from how to shoot, camera tracking the true skill and art form of handheld camera work and much more. The film continues to influence established directors such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola and anybody else that's into film.

After a mammoth fun filled 16 hour road trip driving from London to Berlin with a friend as the driver, me the co-pilot and Miska my cat who is now a EU 'Catizen' holding a passport to prove it. We are finally here, cosy and settled in Berlin. Here's a rough snippet of the route:

From Hackney - London > Folkestone > (Euro Tunnel) > Calais > Dunkirk > Bruges > Antwerp > Eindhoven > Munster > Hanover > Brunswick > Magdeburg to Schöenhauser Allee - Berlin.

Electroacoustic music merges seamlessly with electronically generated or enhanced imagery in this screening of 11 international works—a program that attests to the ongoing maturation of an electronic “inter-arts” that transcends disciplines, genres and geographies. Katsushika Hokusai, Retrospective, Berlin

On Saturday 15.10.2011 I went to see the Hokusai Retrospective at the Martin-Gropius-Baus in Berlin. The exhibition of Hokusai took me back some years to my student days when I studied Fine Art Printmaking at Anglia Ruskin University and Royal College of Art. Katsushika Hokusai was masterful Japanese painter and printmaker specialising in the intricate time consuming skill and art form of woodcuts. The print below is Red Fuji from Hokusai's series, 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'.

Last week between the 4th - 6th October saw the launch of Landis+Gyr, Metering, Billing / CRM Europe 2011, conference / exhibition in Amsterdam. As the Motion Art Director I worked with a tight team of conceptors, motion designers, graphic designers and interaction designers at the agency zweimaleins to produce a gorgeous single-touch interactive Flash display. You can have a sneak peak at the interface but as I mentioned in my previous blog update i'll be introducing this into my new showreel for 2012. Look out for it!

The sound composer I work with Adam Stansbie sent me an email a few weeks ago as he usually does notifying me 'Pollen' music by Adam Stansbie and video by Vishal Shah has been selected for screening again :) at an electroacoustic event. Inspiration Information for me to do some more independent work. Some info below.

The digital era has matured into an art form transcending disciplines, genres and geography, as seen in videos from eight countries. Within its incredibly disparate genres and styles Sounding Images’ works hold in common seamless meshing of electro-acoustic music and electronically generated or enhanced imagery. From multi-national collaborations by artists at major international art centers to auteurs Mac-garreted in outlying cultural urbs and oases come eleven works of aesthetic and technical excellence, united only in their innovation and diversity. Beyond signifying the nascent adulthood of electronic inter-arts, Sounding Images’ works are an optimistic microcosm for international interconnectivity.

'I'm New Here' as the recently departed prolific urban beat-poet Gil-Scott Heron poignantly titled one of his recent tracks on his new album. So Berlin is my new town and I'm new here now and I will be for some time. My sincere apologies for being slow on any Blog updates. I've been kind of busy over the past two months ish working for an advertising agency as an Art Director of the Motion department. I've done some crazy late night shifts - and I mean late night shift in terms of work :). Things around me are changing, I'm changing, facing new challenges especially over the past few days to say the least. However, I sense everything happening to me and around me is for the best.

Anthony McCall at Serpentine Gallery

The cross disciplinary artist Anthony McCall was an inspiration when I visited his exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in early 2008. His work is dynamic, calculated and magically futuroso. A few of my video works have been created using projections to print upon the surface of an object or a person where as he does this and much more. Anthony's work is installation, projection, print, film and performance. The artist creates the illusion of three dimensional shapes, ellipses, waves and cones which are very subtle but yet technically precise in shape and form. If you get a chance to see and experience his work I certainly do recommend. Note* He also worked within the book publishing industry for a while.

Pollen, a film by Vishal Shah, music by Adam Stansbie, has been selected for performance at The Sounding Images screening by REDCAT in LA. The screening will take place some time in Nov 2011.

Resonance, Audio & Video Collaborations

Resonance is the audio video collaboration between audio and video designers / studios. The aim of the collaboration was to explore the relationship between geometry and audio. Saturday 28th May 2011 was the official video shoot, we spent late friday evening rigging, last minute testing and making sure everything was in fine order. We had a good turn out of participants / subjects.
I'm now going post with the footage and begin the whole production process, oh and rumor has it that once the edit is nailed the colour grading will be done at The Mill, London.

As mentioned in my tweet last week about the video shoot, here is a still image from the video shoot last week Thursday. We shot it on a Cannon 5D MK II the subjects name is Kanti. I'll soon be putting up some of the actual moving images. I'm really happy with the way the stills and video came out in the end. We should be doing the main shoot within the next few weeks.

Here's a little teaser. There's some exciting stuff happening over the next two weeks when we go into full swing with the official shoot.

Chris Marker's film La Jetée (1962) is every students entry into moving image and art school top ten filmography must watch list. I first viewed this film on my Foundation Art & Design course when LCC (London College of Communication) used to be called London School of Printing & Distributive Trades in London, at the glamorous Elephant & Castle. A pivotal film short inspiring the likes of Director Terry Gilliam to make his film Twelve Monkeys (1995). I won't critique the film, it would take me ages. Flex by Chris Cunningham

The film 'Flex' by Chris Cunningham is a fairly old work. However, for some reason last week 'Flex' came to mind. I distinctively remember seeing and experiencing the work as a single channel audio video installation at the Royal Academy of Arts back in 2000 in the group exhibition 'Apocalypse'. The film has a Poe and Kafkaesque resonance to this work by Chris Cunningham. Now that I look back I could say that my film 'Seek Assistance' Director, Vishal Shah & Sound, Adam Stansbie was an unconscious reference alongside Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy. Not bad names to reference a work on.

It's been a while since my last Blog update.... I've been to Berlin again which was good fun, seems such as long time ago now. Here's a glimpse at a key scene of my new independent animation which is in full HD 1920px X 1080px. I know its a tease but hey i'll be uploading a storyboard and key scenes as the production develops, I don't want to give away to much at this moment. There is a fantastic team working on this from creative designers, motion designers, typographers, character animators to sound composers working on the production. An independent animation produced by Freaksignal Productions, Directed and Edited by me was a long time coming folks so watch this space as the story unfolds.

Berlin - 36hr Visit

Last week I went to Berlin for a 36 hour visit, where I had pre-arranged some meetings with two highly reputable international creative digital agencies. I visited Icon Mobile Group - HQ in Berlin and Fjord Berlin. I had some constructive feedback on my work but more importantly what these specific digital agencies are currently working on and the integration of moving image and motion graphics within their projects specifically app development, mobile devices and the production of interaction simulations and prototype videos for clients and concept visualisation purposes. The trip was too short, however, I'll definitely fly out again in early March for a week. But this time i'll see more of the culturally rich and historically poignant city. There is an air of excitement and good energy in and around Berlin and I'm loving it.

The Raveonettes, 'Black & White' by BL:ND

A music video for The Raveonettes, track called 'Black & White' produced by the team at BL:ND directed by Chris Do. I can't believe they produced and knocked this up in three weeks flat, with a neat concept, darkly romantic and gothic visual execution and style. I'm very impressed with the mix of styles where shadow puppetry meets digital animation, pen and ink, physical props and good old back projection techniques with defused lighting tricks. A very inspiring piece of work with a great audio track riding the visuals. This is the kind of project I would love to be part of with a creative talented crew.

Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren

A video art classic. 'Meshes of the Afternoon' directed by Maya Deren and her husband Alexander Hammid in 1943, is one of my all time favourite pieces of experimental video art. A truly beautiful, surreal, thought provoking, memory and imagination blurring, circular in narrative with weighted symbolism, black and white experimental film. Every time I watch this film it seems to have a profound affect on me, the film always relates to what ever my situation. Now that's a sign of a timeless film.

The editing and experimental camera work in 'Meshes of the Afternoon' is truly exquisite and defined with feeling, rigour and precision; an art form which many editors today should aim for and revisit throughout their practise. This particular work is influential and of great importance to film and contemporary cinema, think Chris Nolan's 'Inception' there are many references at work here... Stunning and gets me every time I watch it.

'The Clock' by artist Christian Marclay was probably my number one single channel video / cinema piece of work for 2010. 'The Clock' is truly brilliant, simple and thought provoking. However like most brilliant, simple and thought provoking work it consists of great depths of complexity.

The film if you can call it this, is constructed out of moments in cinema when time is expressed or when a character interacts with a clock, watch or just a particular part of the day. Marclay has excepted thousands of these fragments and edited them so that they flow in real time, While 'The Clock' examines how time, plot and duration are depicted in cinema, the video is also a working timepiece that is synchronised to the local time zone. At any moment, the viewer can look at the work and use it to tell the time. Yet the audience watching 'The Clock' experiences a vast range of narratives, settings and moods within the space of a few minutes, making time unravel in countless directions at once. Even while 'The Clock' tell the time, it ruptures any sense of chronological coherence.

'The Clock' plays with how audiences experience narrative in cinema, examining the conventions and devices through which filmmakers create a persuasive illusion of duration. When watching a film, an audience is removed from normal time and swept up in a new register that corresponds to the narrative at hand. 'The Clock' transforms this condition of cinema: time, in this case, corresponds precisely to the actual time beyond the work. The audience will have the peculiar awareness of experiencing a fictional event, or countless events, at what appears to be the same time as when they watch it in the gallery.

Green Screen Studio Shoot

Last week in a studio in West London we did some experimental HD (1920 x 1080) green screen test videos. We got some really nice time based compositions using mobile phones and mobile hand / gesture interaction footage to play with. This is very inspiring and will definitely lead to more experimentation, tests and work using both blue and green screen. Watch this blog for more info....

Peter Kogler Projection

Whilst in Frankfurt am Main in 2010, I had to see Peter Kogler's Projection at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Peter is an Austrian multimedia artist, this piece of computer-generated art work uses an impressive 360-degree multi-projection from 12 synced projectors with a sonic audio installation.

The video installation was first screened as a video projection at Kulturzentrum, 'Die Fabrik', Frankfurt am Main, Germany, August, 2010. The video installation had a great response and we are now planning to distribute the video to film screenings and festivals around the world.
